Shamsu Wadau on Religion and Reality
From Childhood Beliefs to a Mature Perspective
As a kid, I used to believe what clerics preach. I thought, the Malams do the preachings because they want us to make paradise, until I got wiser and realized that it's their business, just like teaching is my business.
Malam will tell you, when picking a wife, don't consider beauty, but if you see malam's wife, beauty upon beauty.
Malam will tell you, not to care about worldly things, but Malam has a mansion in Gombe, Abuja and Kano. The same Malam will tell you that, your mension is in paradise.
Malam will tell you that, you should pray for protection, but Malam will journey in a convoy with dozens of flashy cars heavily protected, probably in bulletproof cars.
Malam will tell you that, you should avoid politicians and royal rulers, but you will see Malam in their houses and offices praying for them and collecting money.
Malam will convince his followers that everything is fine in the country, but he will send his children abroad for their degrees and medical care.
It seems these religious and moral rules are peculiar to the masses. Thank God, Hisbah (Moral Police) made it clear that, their activities only apply to the poor. It's probably the same when it comes to Malam's preachings. According to Malam, peacefully protesting against poor leadership is sinful, that you should only pray for them. I just wonder, as to wether or not Malam cares about you or working for the politicians. The era of all these control is over.
